Thanks for the assistance, David and Jonathon. In the end I'm going a different route.

I pulled out my new laptop which has double the eMMC of my old one. I checked to see what I'd done on it and found just three bits of C++ code from when I was trying to access the eeprom storagee on an ATTiny13 chip. I just copied that to a USB memory stick.

I tried CloneZilla on the old laptop and didn't get anywhere (why do people never put usable instructions with their software?). In the end I went for RescueZilla and that worked. I've transferred everything from the old laptop to the new one. All I need do now is to find a wifi driver. As the laptop has no network port this could get interesting!
