Ok, from that log it looks like the system header files are missing.
Try installing the package libc6-dev (apt-get install libc6-dev) and
try it again.

The apt system is very handy. Another useful apt command you might want
to try is "apt-cache search <string>" where <string> is whatever you
want to search for, so you could try "apt-cache search email" to find
all the packages that are available to do with email. Debian has a
howto document about apt if you'd like to learn more of what you can
do with it: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/index.en.html

So I take it you have all the network and so on working now? Did
installing sarge just fix all that?
