To find out the ip, do some sniffing in promiscious mode (tcpdump,
ethereal) on the same network segment as your sparc. Hopefully you will
see some traffic originating from it. 

As for sniffing/scanning.. The day it becomes illegal to see what's on a
network will be amusing as all the twits who come up with such ideas
will start to wonder why all the network admins have gone on strike!
