Thanks Gareth,

Just spent some time trying to insert commas or tabs in the right places using 
NoteTab (a much improved Notepad replacement),  but concluded that it was 
going to be a long job.   I then saw sense, kicked out Microsoft's toy 
software (Works),  installed Lotus Approach and found that it would import 
the text file after I defined the field sizes for it.  Now have a .dbf file 
as I required.  :-)

Your answer was the  "trigger" I needed many thanks.
