Thanks yet again chaps.......

The @modem link was to /dev/ttyS0 so I created one manually as you suggested
Matt, and the thing worked. Trouble was on reboot it was removed. On
further investigation I spotted /etc/sysconfig/suseconfig the offending
little beast that has been putting things back to the way they want it ("Ve
haff ways of making you connect to ze internet" sprang to mind) ;-) I
opened the file and set a "yes" to a "no" - reset my settings - removed
kinternet from the system - rebooted and then had control. I can now use
kppp/kmail/Firefox as I prefer and rebooting even leaves the icons where I
put them on the desktop. A case perhaps of SuSe being over helpful.

Without the back up from you guys it would have been a case of Windows winning
the desktop war again, as this machine is for a friend of mine who is not too
familiar with computers and needs a machine that is not as open as a barn
door for web/e-mail activities.

Thanks again fellas,

Bob

...............err......now whats this *BSD all about............... :-)
