There should be an option on the system (probably called Package
Management or Repository settings) - not sure what it's called though.
It's a long time since I used an RPM-based system!
The other way that's almost guaranteed to work is using the command line
(chances are you know how to do most of the following - I've tried to make
it step-by-step in case anybody doesn't!)
1) Open a terminal window - preferably a root shell if you can. If you
can't find a root shell, open a normal shell, type "su" and it will ask
for the root password. If that doesn't work, you may have to type "sudo
bash" and then enter your current user's password. If that STILL doesn't
work, you'll have to log in as root - preferably on a text-only terminal
(press ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a text based terminal, ctrl-alt-f7 to get
back.)
2) Go to the directory that has the package you want - "cd
/path/to/directory" (Note: if you right-click on the directory that has
the package you want, and there is an option like "Open
console/terminal/shell here", then you can skip this step)
3) Type in "rpm -i packagename.rpm"
4) Once it has finished installing, type "exit"
That should do the trick. Chances are, unless you're really lucky, it will
tell you that packagename depends on other packages that aren't installed.
You will probably have to hunt them down and install them first. I believe
you can also use wildcards if you wish - so if you went up a directory,
and typed "rpm -i */*.rpm" it would attempt to install all packages from
all subdirectories. Not recommended, mind, as you'll end up with lots of
rubbish you don't need...
Matt
P.S. Does anyone happen to use Vector Linux?
