For the same purposes I've experimented variously with Zenwalk, Vector 
Linux Std/Light, Puppy and Arch Linux.  All have their pros and cons.  
Currently running Arch myself and liking it a lot, but not for the 
first-timer (unless you want to learn a lot, fast!).
