Indeed you were.  I suppose I should have been a bit more careful as 
Debian wouldn't keep exim3 /and/ exim4 floating around without good 
reason, now would they?

I certainly think so.  It took me about ten minutes to configure, if that.

Exim has just been a pain IME.
