| For my dads christmas present this year, I want to solve the utter hell
| he is having with Windows and install Linux on his computer. My question
| is this, I was considering buying him a 30GB hard drive and then
| installing Ubuntu on it on my own computer. Is it possible to then take
| the hard drive, shove it in his computer and have it automatically
| detect hardware and configure the system?
|

I'd have hoped that the above would work. It may be necessary to edit
/etc/modules to ensure the right modules are loaded etc.

One thing to note is that Ubuntu installs a kernel appropriate to your
CPU (e.g compiled for athlon/k7 etc). I'm sure you can see what
[wouldn't] happen if your Dad has a p4 and you have an athlon.

There is an i386 kernel package... it's just not used by default.
