[Wolves] Flash alternative - is there?

Well, the subject line says it all, really.

Is there an alternative to flash for animations on the web?  (Don't say 
GIFs or I'll deck yer... :) )

I've looked into using HTML DIVs updated using JS but IE just won't have 
it (though Mozilla will, interestingly...)

Currently I am having to use a small flash animation (about 40K's worth, 
I believe...) and JS/Divs for basically everything else.  But I really, 
really don't want to use Flash.  Proprietary binary-only format, against 
my religion.  :)

...anyone?
