[Wolves] Mplayer

Cool,

To get DVD's playing I need to be logged in as root due to permissions,
can't be bothered to sort that out.

If you logged into a console without X-windows running then that might
explain the smooth operation, try doing the same as a normal user, if you
get the same without X running then it really must be permissions. As with
most Linux hardware the soundcard is grabed using a directory/file, Go into
the /dev directory and check the permissions and who owns the /dev/dsp
directory chances are that's where the issue is. As root you'll need to use
chown username or use chmod a+rx /dev/dsp to change the attributes of that.

If not just chug along in root ;)

I can't get rstp:// to work in Mplayer even with live365.com patches, I
think the real codec has gone awol, which is a pain as I'd like to dump BBC
radio shows to file then copy them to my not-an-iPod mp3 player.

Hi Lee

Sorry to keep on about this but you obviously know your onions.

Did a little test last night logged in as root (not SU from my user log
in) and Mplayer worked! both video and sound, the video was a little
jumpy but I think I know how to solve that.

Mplayer still refuses to play sound under a normal user though? I take
it this is a permissions issue but I haven't a clue what file, directory
or what to change any ideas?

Regards

Peter Cannon
