He, he, I have tried following my own advice on this particular drive
.......... and it didn't work.  Mainly because the BIOS still does not
even see the drive.  As I said this is bloody big coincidence but
coincidence it surely is.  I had a few of these 8.4gb Quantum drives. 
Every one has died after very little use.  I am so glad I did not pay
for them :-))))  I shall try the disk in another 'older' PC just in
case as I really do not much like this Gigabyte Motherboard.  Linux
doesn't like it at all and I can't be bothered to mess about with
IDEREVERSE to sort out some other problems - RAID/extra ide channels,
long story that I have mentioned before.

Oh, yes, I went straight onto the Ubuntu bugzilla page and logged it
:-))))  It's certainly causing some head scratching and I totally
agree with them that a 'live' CD cannot and should not make changes to
a hard drive.  But this one has.
