I had the same problem under Ubuntu/Gnome. I solved it
with by putting:

#! /bin/sh

echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" >
/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

in /etc/init.d/local

I had to create the file first. Under Fedora the file
is /etc/rc.d/rc.local I think. No faffing with sound
daemons after that.
