I didn't play with Plone long enough to look at all the features so if it has 
the same capabilities sorry Kat.

Maybe you could do with something akin to the Mambo I'm playing with at the 
moment, I know you've looked at this in the past. We could still do with the 
mailing list but how about a login area where you can post news and links.

The current version I'm playing with has some of the elements you hate, it 
turns news posts into a blog. Obviously its permissions based but people 
could submit links and news items (Like Tom Mortimer-Jones did this morning) 
and it has RSS capabilities.
