Things I would do,

Use guessfstype to make sure its ext3,
Disable SMART in your BIOS,

Mount it read only and try e2fsck ?

Try the tools on http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

I'd try the Maxtor site.  They will probably have some tools available.
When a Hard Drive is formatted at the factory there are always a number of
'hidden' blocks spare.  They can be brought into play in this sort of
scenario.  Well, that's what I was told by the Seagate guys :-)))
