[Wolves] Ubuntu and Totem Media Player

HI

I am experimenting with Ubuntu and would seek the advice of those experienced in the distro - the Totem media player will not recognise or play dvd's or cd's.  The path to the optical device is correctly set but there is no sound or vision.  Does the dvd problem lie in the decoding software from Xine?

All advice and information will be very much appreciated -
