I have a coolpix 2100 which has 3x optical zoom (i think). works fine 
under linux (mass storage device) and is plug+play with ubuntu etc.

I've not seen any point to upgrade to a higher resolution camera, 
although one that handles low light conditions better would always be 
welcome
