because when you do that you ask for more connections to a server every 
time you connect.  Developers are nice and don't want to get a bad rep 
crashing slower servers. 

It's not just a bandwidth thing it's possible to flood a server with 
requests that cause it to run out of file pointers and other finite 
resources so it's nicer to ask for less data at a time so everyone can 
share the resources available.
