I think, though I'm not certain, that the pwc module
that both of our webcams use, is out of the kernel at
the moment due to a number of problems with the old
maintainer and the legal vs open source status of the
pwcx module which is a decompression library used by
pwc module. I think Ubuntu have patched the kernel to
include the module in it's current form, other
distributions may not be doing this.

Alan Cox, kernel hacker extraordinaire, recently
announced the return of the module to main kernel tree
and was once again beseiged by the former maintainer
of the module. Once these issues are sorted out I'm
sure the module will be back in mainstream kernels and
in other distributions.
