I used to think that too and spent £40 every year or so to up-grade  
or buy new. Then I went to a LUG meeting a was heard about Ubuntu  
from the people who were doing a talk on it. It's a fab one cd little  
distro, and uses apt, which after using it for a bit is just  
bril.Give Ubuntu a try.
