[Wolves] Brief review

This is short and sweet :-)

I put the latest 'free' release of Mandriva (2006) onto a spare drive
this weekend. In the past I have moaned about Mandrake/Mandriva
because I have personally found it incredibly slow. Not anymore. I
installed onto a 6gb drive, plain standard out of the box install by
the way with KDE as desktop. The machine is an AMD 500 K6 II with
256mb of PC 133 memory and a 64mb Nvidia graphics card (cheap one at
that). The install went very smoothly and quite quick I might add.
Everything seems to work and it runs at an acceptable pace. I then
added the required files and lib's for DVD playback (commercial films
that is). I got the usual jerky frame rate which I am used to with
this box so DVD's are playable but unwatchable. That's not a problem
as I have no real intention of attempting to watch films on a 15inch
screen :-) I just wanted to try it to see if they went on ok.

So, anybody thinking of trying Mandriva 2006, go for it. It's quicker
than before and seems a nice stable distro. Perhaps my only niggle is
that it couldn't find the HP Laserjet 4 on the network despite me
using samba to try to grab it. Again, that's nothing new and is more
likely my fault for not setting config files properly.... though I did
use the GUI for this and it should really work :-(
