If there are no common-* files in pam.d it isn't a huge problem.

Those common files are included in other service specific files on
Debian so you can make a change to all services easily. On RH maybe
you have to configure each service individually. including the
pam_winbind.so lines

SMB should work without configuring PAM as far as I know.

If Samba isn't working you should enter log level = 5 in smb.conf and
post some debugging logs.
