You could also try changing the line 'security = user' to
'security=share' in the smb.conf file and see what happens.

Samba uses shadow passwords. Use man smbpasswd to set passwords for users.
I found that WebMin (http://www.webmin.com) can take some of the headache
out of linux administration including samba setup and password management.
