Bad news, I'm afraid. I have downloaded and examined the windows
drivers. This device is a windows GDI printer, ie it uses the (windows)
PC to produce the page image, based on the image of the page that
windows has in memory.  The printer equivalent of a winmodem.

The upshot is, you will always need a window(s) box connected to the
printer in order to print to it.

However, the XP drivers provide a PCL emulation which you may be able to
use with CUPS.
