I've found this thread really interesting because I used to have the
equivalent role on VMS.
When the list looks finished, I think it would be worth moving it over
to the WIKI for future reference. We're doing collaborative content
creation here. That's what they're for.
I agree with Adam's comment that clusters are unusual but whenever I've
come across kick-ass processing needs (motor industry - finite-element
stress analysis, gas - pipeline pressure modelling; power trading -
market modelling, oil industry - multi-currency accounting, Electricity
generation R&D - Turbine modelling) it's always been on Unices. If
you've been running a simulation for 2 days you don't want it to blue
screen because someone moved the console mouse at the wrong time.
If I was about to replace my ancient Cray with 256 Intel processors, I'd
be hoping I wasn't going to pay for 256 licences.
