ps ax | grep smbd

I have noticed that Ubuntu doesn't seem to start the
Samba daemons by default, so:

sudo /etc/init.d/smbd start

(I'm not on Ubuntu at the mo, so the daemon might be
called samba rather than smbd I can't remember.)

There is probably a graphical way of configuring it to
start at boot time, but i can't remember off the top
of my head.
