I've not sat and read the thread properly so forgive me if this is tosh.

Why are you messing about with a possible flaky disk?  Cant  you change the 
jumper to slave then read it, copy that to a new disk?

Or have you got an externall HDD caddy? same procedure as above.

Pop down to me today and I'll get the data off (your only up the road) email

PS you can bring the machine if you like.
