This issue is actually being talked about on the GNOME usability list.
There appear to be two primary things.  One is the need to allow users
to transition to GNOME without difficulty.  The other is the need to
have good usability from a non-prejudiced perspective.  In other words,
to promote good usability as a concept, rather than just aping another
operating system user interface.

There is a lot of research that needs to be done before critical
questions regarding best practice can be answered.  On the other hand,
Novell have been doing their own usability testing, and have obviously
made some clear decisions regarding what they thought would suit their
customer base best.
