Still here :) I lurk but seldom post because tbh I've lost some of the
enthusiasm I used to have for linux. This anything to do with linux,
it's because I've turned into an algorithmic-squirrel and do really sad
things like calculate iteration times and read books about state machines.

I only work at the electronics shop on odd occasions now - I'm self
employed as an engineer & consultant (down-shifting, anyone?).
<selfpromote> I'd like to take this opportunity to offer my services to
lug-members at a reduced rate :p </selfpromote>

Ian doesn't stock many webcams, and I've personally had lots of problems
with linux & webcams - I've tested them on *ix and they're ok, but the
customer comes back saying it won't work. I've given up even attempting
to support webcams in the 3D scanner, and I have developed a "brooktree
or go away" attitude to all cameras on linux.

Even if a webcam does work for me on linux, I find that doing standard
updates or <something else simple> will break it, and I will have to
faff around for ages. I don't hold linux responsible for this, I hold
cheap camera manufacturers and designers that release cameras with
identical model numbers and entirely dissimilar chipsets.
