I'm not a webcam user but I do know of this wonderful little project.

This guy is pretty much singlehandedly writing loads of device drivers
specifically for webcams.  There may be some useful information here.
Otherwise the other best place to try would be the Ubuntu or Kubuntu
forums :-)
