Hey Mo

I have a Phillips webcam from about 7 years ago which works fine with
this driver, the same drivers also supports quite a few Logitech,
Creative Labs and other Phillips ones. Be sure to pick one that the
website says works, I bought a random Logitech one about 3 years ago
that didn't work and I later found out that it would probably never
work. This driver is at:

Oh, actually, I can't see a list of supported devices there so look

I also have a laptop with a Ricoh webcam built in which isn't supported
out of the box at the moment (on Ubuntu at least), but I found (Ubuntu
packaged) kernel modules for it here:

There are other drivers also, just search google for Linux webcam and
pick model listed as supported by one of these pages, or one you find
yourself.

Ekiga (formerly Gnomemeeting) works with webcams (never actually used it
to talk to somebody with Ekiga), Cheese is good fun for kids (and
adults), camorama is ok too. I think people used to use xawtv in the
Oalden Days. There are other apps for serving images from your webcam
via a webserver, such as camserv, webcam, camstream. I also appear to
have a xawtv replacement installed, called 'came'.

There are recipes out there for using your webcam as a motion triggered
security camera, I installed half of the apps with that intention but
I've never got around to setting that up.
