We use VMware at work so I have it at home too but I've never come across that so I can't help you, other than tell you what I've got on my system as mine works.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and my version of GCC is as follows:

adam at elmo:~$ gcc -v
Using built-in specs.
Target: i486-linux-gnu
Configured with: ../src/configure -v --with-pkgversion='Ubuntu 4.3.2-1ubuntu12' --with-bugurl=file:///usr/share/doc/gcc-4.3/README.Bugs --enable-languages=c,c++,fortran,objc,obj-c++ --prefix=/usr --enable-shared --with-system-zlib --libexecdir=/usr/lib --without-included-gettext --enable-threads=posix --enable-nls --with-gxx-include-dir=/usr/include/c++/4.3 --program-suffix=-4.3 --enable-clocale=gnu --enable-libstdcxx-debug --enable-objc-gc --enable-mpfr --enable-targets=all --enable-checking=release --build=i486-linux-gnu --host=i486-linux-gnu --target=i486-linux-gnu
Thread model: posix
gcc version 4.3.2 (Ubuntu 4.3.2-1ubuntu12)

Kernel version:

adam at elmo:~$ uname -a
Linux elmo 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:24:39 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

If you've got other versions then I'm not sure how that happened, I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10. Maybe you installed the wrong version, like installing GCC 3 instead of the one which comes with build-essentials or something.

It would help to know which version of VMware you're using. I know there are some hoops to jump through with VMware Server 1.x these days.

Sorry I can't help you directly but there may be some pointers to your problem above.
