Um Live CD / Hirens software methinks?

The issues are 'Two separate unrelated problems'

I should also point out the Monitor is on a KVM switch the XP Pro runs
fine so if the monitor was flaky XP would not work either.
Live CD's on the openSUSE machine runs fine so by process of elimination
its the hard install that's a fault.
