Tbh, it wasn't Unity that I didn't like. It took me about 45 mins to get
used to and mostly stays out of my way. It annoyed me that they'd
decided to reinvent the wheel rather than make GNOME 3 better and this
seems to be an Ubuntu trait with other things too. There have been
constant rumblings of Ubuntu not contributing to upstream projects it
ships (kernel, GNOME and others) and developing stuff behind a difficult
to enter if not completely walled garden. More recently there are
accusations of deliberately obfuscating it's IP policy:

Admittedly, I'm not able to accurately articulate this accusation or
back it up, it's just an underlying feeling I've had since Unity. I
recall at Oggcamp 2013 there was a panel debate about whether Ubuntu was
annoying and losing traditional Linux users to other distros. A show of
hands amongst 250-300 people showed that around 90% had been regular
Ubuntu users that had moved to other distros for similar reasons as
noted above.
