Nothing you can do to wipe these drives will be faster and easier
than paying 20p each to have them destroyed. If your motivation is
only to destroy the data in the fastest cheapest way possible, it
sounds like you already found it.

If on the other hand you want to reuse or resell the drives, it's a
lot of work and reselling will make for probably below minimum wage
returns on your time.

It depends how strongly you feel about doing more than the legal
minimum according to WEEE regulations.
