Greetings all,

Two good presentations last month - thanks to Simon and Ruediger. It's good to
see live demos - and Simon's demoing of Gphoto and digital camera was good -
but I'm a sucker for playing with hardware :-) Ruediger's demo of a SuSE
installation on a virtual computer through the use of VMWare was intriguing,
but this obviously "threw" a few people who are very new to Linux, and the odd
Gotchas it threw up probably made it look more difficult than it really is.

What with Ruediger's projections for the future of Linux and the recent
Richard Stallman lecture in Sheffield (which lots of WYLUGers went to), those
of us who want to, have had plenty of opportunity to mull over the less
technical whys and wherefores of the Free Software/Open Source movements
and its place in the wider world.

I saw Stallman 10 years or so ago at University of Leeds. He's still as much
of a "character" as ever and continues to generate controversy whereever he
goes.

Anyway onto the coming months. Next meeting is GNOME GNIGHT, with Ben Lamb
talking about configuring and using the Gnome desk top environment, and
Nigel Metheringham covering writing applications for Gnome.

For December 11th we have a Kernel hacking talk by Matthew Wilcox. It's a
version of a talk he's giving at a Linux conference in Sydney in Jan 2001.
It's on "Leases & Directory Notification". Matthew's done a lot of kernel work
including work on the HP PA Risc port of Linux.

Mike Banahan, being the gent he is, has kindly delayed his talk on his X
Terminal experiments into 2001. For the new year we also have Frank Shute on
Tex and creating PDF files, and Ben Fowler on WWW programming with Perl.

The December meeting is WYLUG's 3rd Birthday - we must do something to
celebrate. A festive Xmas curry has been suggested, Rob will you take change
in organising that? Maybe people could bring some xmas cake or similar to have
with tea and coffee?

That's it. Hope to see you at the Gnovember meeting.

All the best
Jim
