Subject: Open Source Workshop
Hi
Don't know if this event is of interest to any of your users but here are
the details so you can pass them on if you think they might be.
Open Source and Free Software for beginners workshop - Batley, West
Yorkshire on 18th June 2003
This is a free workshop aimed at people working in the voluntary, public
and community sectors, and will consist of a practical demonstration of
Open Source and Free software in action. The day will help participants to
understand what is involved in using Open Source software, what the
financial gains are, and what the implications are of shifting away from
'tried and trusted' software like Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Server and
Microsoft Office.
The workshop will provide an introduction to the following knowledge
areas:_
a.. Setting up a Linux server running Apache Web server
b.. Using a Linux server to provide services such as Internet access,
file sharing and printing to a local network of PCs running
Microsoft Windows
c.. Creating 'smart' Web sites and Web applications using PHP and MySQL
on a Linux server
People who we think would benefit from the workshop:
a.. school teachers involved in information communication technology
(ICT) implementation and school technicians involved in supporting
ICT infrastructure
b.. community and voluntary sector technicians
c.. community organisations looking for affordable ways of maintaining
ICT
d.. public sector ICT users and technical staff who want to know more
about the possiblities of Open Source and Free Software
e.. web developers and designers interested in moving beyond Web 'sites'
towards Web 'applications' using effective and sustainable solutions
The workshop is financed from a European Social Fund Grant secured by the
Community Media Association and is free to all participants. It will run
from 9.30 to 4.30
We are also working on a report on implementing Open Source in the
community so if you can't make the workshop, do email us to get a copy of
the report (should be ready by end of July).
