My recommendation would be to go for a combination of OpenVPN for the
VPN component, and VNC for the remote access bit.

Both are easy to configure, and both do what they say on the tin.

You would run OpenVPN from your admin's laptop to the linux gateway,
thereby adding his laptop to your network, and then he would run VNC
directly from his laptop to the W2K server.
