Good move. Look also at Dans Guardian for content filtering. It's
fantastic and works very well with squid.

Not via squid, which is just a HTTP proxy (with knobs on, but not the
right knobs for this).

You could use OpenVPN to make the remote laptop appear on the LAN. This
would be transparent to any network administration tools he might want
to use.
