[Wylug-discuss] Where do I start?

This is probably a no-brainer for the list, but not for me.

I have a network of 35 users, which are non a switched Ethernet Lan at
100Mbps. The LAN is connected to the outside world using (please don't
laugh)

400Mhz Pentium PC running W98
Solidshare software www.solidshare.com
BT ADSL 512 Kbps
BT Alcatel Speed Touch USB Router

I put it in when we had NO money and its even a private account on a private
line. Solidshare is a NAT and a basic firewall. Apart from 2 fixed IP
addresses no one is allowed in and in 3 years I think that’s still true. We
have a dynamic IP address, which we publish using a free DNS publisher.

What do I want to do?

1.	I'd like to control where staff can access on the internet.
2.	I'd like to stop nasty stuff (spyware etc) getting in whilst surfing
3.	Ideally I'd like to monitor and/or control individual users surfing
4.	I'd like to stop all IM.

All PC's are 2 years old or younger, all run Windows XP. We have 3 Linux
Servers. We do not have a web site, or any regular outward facing presence.

We use a windows based mailserver called MDaemon which uses the ADSL via the
ADSL PC to collect and deliver email using DPOP, and SMTP.

Is a Linux based setup the way to get a reliable, updateable Gateway?

Thanks as always

Nick
