That's the conclusion I've finally reached, too.

After a protracted fight with various versions of wine and microsoft project I 
now have MS Project 98 running on my laptop. Yay. (Project 2003, on the other 
hand, refused even to attempt to install - "upgrade your version of windows". 
Yeah, right.)
