Thanks Simon, I tried this: dd if=/dev/sda of=corrupt_image bs=512 Oh dear, the partition table contains an email now! I think I will have to format the whole drive, but I wonder how this could happen under Linux! I'm pretty sure it wasn't Windows (although I would like to blame:) Peter
