Lists of common applications with the similar uses (not competetive)
Like OpenOffice, Gnome office (abiiword, gnumeric), KOffice (whatevers
in that)

On the graphics side you've got the Gimp, plus some other vector-based
programs (scribus, xfig)

some of these may be worth fleshing out in relatively short discussions.
