Browsers will look for a file called 
   favicon.ico
and this will be used if one exists.  If you look in your web server
logs you will probably see loads of requests for if.  I forget the
format of the favicon.ico file but googling should help.  You can get
some attractive black/white/yellow tex shaped favicons.
