Indeed - but given the high likelihood of the use of condenser mics, a mixer,
or a mic channel in a box, will have the requisite gain control, and Dave
will have a pocket full of cash :)

I use an iRiver H120 with a pair of electrets for recording band practices. It
is pretty good for something little bigger than an iPod. Sadly they suffer a
periodic glitch which manifests itself as a click on one recorded channel.
It's easy enough to clean up manually in a sound editor or with Gnu Wave
Cleaner though.
