I certainly do agree, but the priority question for me is not 'how do we
explain', but rather 'how do we change', the current situation?

Both are necessary but insufficient.  

Only those who want to change things have much incentive to act and
there is little point in acting if the action taken is directionless
and/or ineffective.

All I'm saying is that advocates (myself included) usually find it
easier to blame 'badness' (e.g. corporations) and stupidity (e.g. of
headmasters), than to accept the discipline and shere hard work involved
in taking control of the situation in order to turn it around.
