I think you'll also lose desktop shortcuts? But some people may prefer
that.

Hi Kev,
Looks like Gnome is drawing the background in, presumably interfering
with glmatrix's attempts to draw in the root X window.
You can try to stop Gnome from drawing the background, but it is a
hidden feature.
Run gconf-editor, which allows you to configure all the Gnome options.
In the treeview select "/" -> desktop -> gnome -> background
In the right hand window there should now be a checkbox called
draw_background.
If you uncheck that I bet you will be able to have a program draw in the
root window for you.
If it doesn't work, well, you know where to poke about now.
