So you discount the Macintosh?

The original Mac was released in January 1984, rather before GEM
(January 1985) or the Amiga (July 1985).  The Amiga Workbench and both
versions of GEM (PC and Atari ST) were all a very long way behind the
Mac in terms of usability.

Windows 1.0 was released in November 1985, but 3.0 (the first version
I can imagine being described as even slightly usable by "average
human beings") wasn't released until May 1990.  By that time, of
course, it was competing with Macintosh System 6 (April 1988, replaced
by System 7 in June 1991).
