  For my initial experiment I just did a `zcat fdboot.dsk.gz
> /dev/sdb` onto a USB drive, put it in the the Eee and
pressed ESCape at the BIOS prompt for the boot drive
selection screen.

  Since this worked (like "El Torito", IIRC, and somewhat
wastefully), the next step will be working out either a) how
to get my desktop machine to write appropriate partitions,
MBRs, and boot sectors ('ms-sys' probably, which does
syslinux and FreeDOS types as well as MicroSoft), or b)
cheat: simply copy the GrUB configuration from my old laptop
and use 'grub-install' from the Eee command line.
