I ran KDE 4.0 from a usb pen-drive on the original 701, and was amazed how 
well it coped.  It even did "wobbly windows" when my desktop box wouldn't :-)

The lack at that time was the ath5k driver, which, I understand, would have 
given me wireless access, but didn't come into the kernel early enough.  When 
I've a bit of spare time I'll update the drive and see whether it works now 
:-)
